how to choose what you need when painting in photoshop?

hey

i’m a beginner in digital painting and i get really confused when choosing what i need?
how much should i set the resolution?
what colors should i choose?
and the most important thing….
what brushes should i choose?

i loaded many lessons from other pro painters but got confuses since i’m only a beginnner??
hey
mmm
what are complementary colors??

Your choice of resolution will depend upon your intended use of the image. If you want to print it, you should make it at least 300 PPI. If you’re only going to use it for web purposes, then 72 PPI is the standard.

Your color choice will be determined by the image itself and the feeling you want to impart to the viewer. Different colors evoke different responses. Information about Color Theory will help you to know what they are.

Brushes are a very subjective, very personal choice. The brushes that come with Photoshop are underrated in my opinion. There are more brushes included in the program than most users are aware of. It’s just that they’re not loaded by default.

To load the additional bushes:
♦ Select the Brush Tool
♦ Click on the pull-down icon for the brush field. It’s located at the top of the canvas in the Options Bar
♦ Click the sideways triangle in the upper right portion of the list window
♦ At the end of the fly-out list, the additional included brush sets are displayed.
♦ Click on the set of your choice, then click the Append Button
♦ The additional brushes will now show up at the end of the regular list.

You should also get to know the Brush Engine. Especially if you have a graphics tablet. The Brush Engine (Window > Brushes) has dozens of parameters that allow you to make adjustments to any brush so that it will behave the way you want it to. You can set brushes to fade or to scatter or to act as if they’ve been loaded with two colors. And that’s just the beginning. I find it much more useful in achieving the look I’m after rather than downloading someone else’s brushes. I use downloaded brushes from time to time but mostly just for specialty purposes.

Complimentary Colors are Colors that are opposite one another on the color wheel. Here’s a basic tut on Color Theory.
