In Image Re-size Dialog in Photoshop Elements, what does "scaling styles" mean? When should I check it when re-sampling photos?

I’ve used Elements since version 1 and I’ve never checkmarked that box. If you apply a Layer Style, it resizes the style that’s been applied when the image is resized. I’ve applied styles and resized and have never noticed any difference. Now that you’ve pointed it out, I’ll have to try it and see what it does;-)

OK.. I tried it and it does make a difference with styles like Bevels that create physical changes to the image. With scaling styles unchecked the reduced size made the bevel I applied look rough and scrunched. With it checked the bevel looked smoother. Thanks … I’ve learned other new thing about Elements.

I know that in photoshop CS4 to get the layers styles (e.g. overlay, outer lighting ….) you only have to go to the right hand side of the program whnere that vertical toolbar of adjustments, content … stuff is. Double click on the selected layer you want to add styles to and a window appears aksing what you want to style.

In photoshop 8, when i do this (doubel click on the selected layer i want styled) it just asks me if I want to rename this layer or if i want to add another layer. I dont want this. I just want to know how i can access Layer styles in photoshop elements 8.0!

Could someone PLEASE HELP ME!!! i’m so lost!

I have been searching on how to add a layer style that came with a brush set in Elements 8.0, I see a lot of sites online saying go to the Photo Creations folder however therer isn’t one. All the other styles are under Presets under Styles but when I added the .asl file it didn’t install it, even though I clicked to open command on the .asl file which is what you are supposed to do…help?

C:\Program files (x86)(if you have Windows 7)\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 8.0\Presets\Styles

Do not have Elements open when you paste the styles into this folder because Elements needs to find them on start up.

I’m just curious. I don’t have PhotoShop. I use a free program called GIMP, but I see all these PhotoShop "styles" and I don’t know what they’re used for.

I thin you mean ‘Layer Style" when you say photoshop styles. Layer styles allow you to add effects to a specific layer such as bevel and emboss, stroke, drop shadow, outer glow, inner glow and many more. For example you can create a engraved look on a bar of chocolate in photoshop or add a glass effect to a button. Layer styles mainly give an attractive look to an object.

How to load styles on photoshop elements 8? I have alot of styles in the folder but it wont load them…. why is this..can someone help me thanks

Unfortunately, Layer Styles can’t be loaded when you need to use them like Brushes can. They have to be installed in the program. Installing Layer Styles and Actions involve 2 steps. First, you install the file into the proper folder in Program Data and then you have to make and install an xml file in the Styles metadata folder in the Program Data folder. HUH!!! It’s not as hard as it sounds – I’ve done it a gazillion times now but the first couple of times I did it, I followed the instructions step by step.

"In Windows Explorer’ should read "In Windows XP".

Once you’re comfortable installing Styles, you’ll want more and more of them;-)

I managed to delete the Outline Text tool in Photoshop Elements 6.0 by accident.
Do know how I can get it back?
Should I deinstall and then reinstall Photoshop completely?

Essentials > Reset Essentials. That option should be in upper right corner in the Photoshop.

I want to eventually do imaginative paintings that look realistic, would copying photos help me with this?

absolutely, it helps with improving all art styles. also getting a nice tablet if you don’t already have one. Another thing i do sometimes is just draw the basics on paper and then bring it in to photoshop to paint the rest.

I draw a rectangle on a layer, i copied this layer, then i applied a drop shadow on the first layer, and I copied the layer style to the second one. Then i tried to change the angle of the drop shadow on the second layer, but both layer styles change together. So If i change the angle on one, another changes too. I cannot mirror the drop shadow. I tried to rename the layers, put them in different groups, but nothing help. Do you know how to stop them change together?

In the drop shadow section uncheck "use global light" This will add a drop shadow to only the layer you are working on

I’ve got the shapes/styles from this site but they get boring after a while and I’m running out of ideas! Help!
