I have Photoshop Elements 6, and I can’t find my layer styles. I can’t find the drop shadow option.?
I’m using Photoshop Elements 6 and don’t know where do find my layer styles. I’m used to using CS2 at school, and I don’t know where to find them on Elements 6. I want to use a drop shadow currently, but I don’t know where to find any of the styles- drop shadow, bevel/emboss, anything. If someone could tell me where to find them that would be aweseome! Thanks!

i had this problem too with bevel and emboss, but there’s a drop menu in the EDIT; Effects palette; and the second icon (Layer Styles) choose drop shadows in the menu, and some icons will appear. choose one of the icons that you like best by double-clicking it. here’s an image of how i used this to get bevel and emboss: http://i32.tinypic.com/30ngff9.png
Photoshop Blending Modes/Styles wont work in a single document….?
I’m currently working on two projects in photoshop. In one of them, the blending modes (drop shadow, ect) is working, and in the other, it’s not. How can this be? I’m using CS3, by the way.
Do I have something deselected perhaps? In the layers window, the styles beneath the layer are greyed out. I’ve deleted the preferences file on start up and everything.
please help! thanks
It sounds like you’re trying to add layer styles to a layer that is locked. If the layer that you’re trying to add styles to is the original background layer, it will be locked by default. Make a duplicate copy of the layer to add layer styles. If the layer you’re working with isn’t the background layer, then just highlight the layer in the layers palette and click on the lock icon at the top of the list to unlock it.
PhotoShop Tips: Layer Styles & Text
One of the more useful PhotoShop functions is Layer Styles (drop shadow, bevel & emboss, etc.). I use it mostly for text effects — which is what I will demonstrate here.

How do I change layer styles in Photoshop Elements?
I picked up a copy of Photoshop Elements 6.0, but I can’t find out how to change the layer style settings. I can see the style settings option in the layer menu, but it’s always grayed out so the only way that i can add effects to them is using the filter menu, which is less than idea.
Is this because I’ve only got the Elements version? If so, why is there a layer styles option in the first place if I can’t use it? Or are there certain conditions that need to be met, like a certain tool that needs selecting before I can use this option?
You need to apply a layer style before you can use the settings. The settings only change what’s already there. To find the Layer Styles: Open the Effects Palette above the Layers Palette. Click on the 2nd icon from the left at the top. Pick a style catagory from the box at the left top and then select a specific style to apply. You won’t be able to use all the styles. Example: you can’t apply a drop shadow to a whole photo because a drop shadow appears around the outside and outside the photo is the workspace. Styles can only be applied to selected and duplicated parts of images, to text and to shapes. To duplicate a selected are press CTRL+J on the keyboard after making the selection. Once the selection is on its own layer you can apply just about every style to it…and then use the Style Settings to make changes in the style.
The easiest way to practice using Layer Styles is to type some text using a fat font then apply one or more styles to it and use the Style Setting to get an idea of how they work on the styles.
why does the layer style in photoshop remain greyed out?
i upload an image and make a duplicate copy this is what people say fixes the problem but that is not the case with me. Idk how to ungrey it.
You can’t put Layer Styles on the Original Background layer because it’s locked. You have to select the duplicate layer and apply the Layer Styles to it.
